Alnwick Garden Christmas Light Trail gets go-ahead despite Tier 3

A Christmas Light Trail at The Alnwick Garden will get under way within days, bringing some festive cheer for families as the region prepares for the toughest Tier 3 restrictions.

A spokesman for the Northumberland visitor attraction said it is “fantastic” that the annual event can go ahead and this year will even see it extended into Alnwick itself.

While Tier 3 will mean less chance of indoor space to keep warm, visitors are simply being advised to wrap up well for what is billed as a “magical outdoor Northumbrian extravaganza”.

And this year it will be bigger, better and brighter with a new installation in the centre of Alnwick too and shops joining in with sparkling window displays when the trail launches a longer run from December 4 until New Year’s Eve.

Takeaway food and drink also will be available and a festive market will be making a return on various days in the run-up to Christmas.

Mark Brassell, director of The Alnwick Garden, said: “This year we have extended our Christmas Light Trail, giving families more opportunities to come and enjoy our festive offering in a Covid-safe environment.”

And, with the addition of a live-streamed photograph platform, it will be helping families to connect with relatives anywhere.

Mark added: “This year our message is one of hope and reunion – we have constructed a gigantic selfie frame which will be live-streamed via our website and we are encouraging our visitors to bring written messages to show their loved ones around the world.”

There also will be professional photographers on-site so that families can capture their memories.

The Garden has been working with the Alnwick Chamber of Trade, the town council and various stakeholders on the addition of a light projection in the Market Square that also aims to help boost trade for independent local retailers.

Takeaway food and drink options will be available in both the Garden and in the town, where many shops will be creating window displays and extending their opening hours, while James Ormsby from Alnwick Market also confirmed that the market will reopen from December 3.

This will include some new stalls, alongside the established favourites selling Christmas gifts, and will run in the Market Square every Thursday and Saturday up to Christmas.

Lynda Wearn, Mayor of Alnwick, said of the planned activities: “This is really good news for Alnwick and I would like to thank all those who have worked so hard to make what will be a very different Christmas a great Covid-safe experience for visitors, residents and businesses in the town.”

Tickets to the Alnwick Garden Christmas Light Trail, running December 4-31, cost £11 and can be booked here.
