The Elco field hockey team has had a fantastic season to date. On Tuesday night, it very nearly got even better.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, Garden Spot had something to say about that as well, edging Elco 2-1 in overtime in a Lancaster-Lebanon League postseason play-in game at Cocalico High School.
The contest was necessitated after Elco (10-2) and Garden Spot (10-3) tied for the Section 3 title. Lauren Esh scored the game winner with 1:16 left in the extra session after a marathon battle to give the Spartans a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Elco had taken a 1-0 lead on Amanda Smith’s tally with 13:25 left in the first quarter, and Garden Spot drew even with Brianna Hynson’s score at the 3:25 mark of the opening quarter.
The teams then battled through three scoreless quarters and most of the extra session before Esh ended the drama in the closing minutes of overtime.
“They did great things, and we did great things,” Raider coach Kelsey Thorley told Lancaster Newspapers’ Steve Navaroli. “It is just some things don’t fall your way. They are a great team. It is always competitive when we play them. I think we are pretty evenly matched, and that was pretty obvious from our regular season to this game specifically.”
The two teams had traded victories in their two regular season meetings. Elco won 3-1 on September 29 and Garden Spot returned the favor with a 1-0 victory earlier this month.
