Mars Hill pounds Spring Garden 32-14 to earn 3rd straight Super 7 berth

The Mars Hill Bible Panthers will make their third straight Super 7 appearance after whipping Spring Garden 32-14 at home Friday night in Florence. It will be the Panthers’ first in Class 2A after moving up from 1A where they played for two seasons.

Mars Hill (12-2) will meet Abbeville (12-1) on Friday at 2:45 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa for the Class 2A title.

Coach Darrell Higgins’ squad rolled to 457 rushing yards while holding Spring Garden to just 30. Peyton Higgins and Justus McDaniel both had 145 yards on the ground, Higgins on 16 carries and McDaniel on 12. Both had two touchdowns on the night. Hunter Kilpatrick had an even 100 yards on just six rushes with a TD.

Mars Hill, winners of the 2018 title and runners-up last season, pounded the ball on the ground 52 times and finished with 505 total yards. The winners were just 2-for-9 on third-down conversions, but made 4-of-5 fourth-down tries.

Ryley Kirk completed 6-of-12 passes for Spring Garden for 145 yards and two TDs and Weston Kirk was 1-for-1 for 33 yards. Cooper Austin caught four passes for 124 yards and a score while Weston Kirk caught two passes for 38 yards and a TD.

Mars Hill had 25 first downs and Spring Garden had 12.
